Amazon Affiliate Links on YouTube, What Is Allowed
A brand new YouTube channel cannot put a clickable link in a video description at all, and Amazon has nothing to do with that. YouTube holds that ability behind a tier it calls advanced features, and a verified phone number does not reach it.
So two gates stand in front of an Amazon link on YouTube, and only one is in Amazon's rulebook. Which surfaces the program accepts is already answered in the placement map; what follows is the machinery underneath. Quotations here were checked against the live pages on August 21, 2026: the Operating Agreement dated October 15, 2025, the Program Policies dated April 14, 2026, YouTube's help pages and the FTC's endorsement guides.
Two gates stand in front of the link
YouTube sorts channel abilities into three levels, and what matters sits at the top. Advanced access carries "Add clickable links to your long-form video description and posts" and "Pin comments on videos and posts". Phone verification opens the middle level only. Advanced arrives with what YouTube calls sufficient channel history, or through verification with an identity document or video.
Amazon's gate is the expected one: the channel has to be listed as a Site on your application, under the conditions Amazon publishes for social pages. Neither gate knows about the other, so a channel can clear Amazon's side and still hold a tag it cannot make tappable.
Where a YouTube link is clickable and where it is only text
YouTube's own map of where a link is tappable:
| Surface | Clickable | Condition YouTube attaches |
|---|---|---|
| Long form video descriptions and comments | Yes | Asterisked: clickable external links need advanced access |
| Shorts descriptions and Shorts comments | No | The address is text on a screen, not a tap |
| Channel profile links | Yes | Up to 14 links on the channel page |
| End screens | Yes | External website links are for Partner Program channels |
| Live chat and channel descriptions, horizontal live streams | Yes | No further condition listed |
| The same, on vertical live streams in the mobile app | No | YouTube lists this case as its own row |
| Posts | No | Listed as not clickable and asterisked at once. Reported as published |
| YouTube Shopping affiliate program links | Yes | A separate mechanism, further down |
Two rows there rewrite a script, not a settings page. A Shorts first channel saying the link is below points at text someone has to retype. The live stream rows split by format and by how the stream is watched: horizontal on the clickable side, the vertical feed in the mobile app on the other.
Saying the address out loud is still a link
YouTube's external links policy regulates more than hyperlinks. It covers "clickable URLs, showing text of URLs in videos or images, and obfuscated URLs (such as writing 'dot com' instead of '.com')", adds that links "can also include verbally directing users to other sites", and reaches "video, audio, channel, comments, pinned comments, live streams, and any other YouTube product or feature." Saying the address aloud, the obvious workaround, does not leave the policy. It only removes the tap.
The one sentence YouTube publishes about affiliate content
On the same page sits YouTube's only direct statement: "Note: Affiliate content doesn't violate YouTube's Terms of Use. Excessively posting affiliate content in dedicated accounts may violate our policies around spam."
The permission is explicit and first-hand. The limit is not a number: excessively carries no figure, and neither does dedicated accounts. Link thresholds circulating elsewhere are on no Google page I could find.
Your channel is a Site in Amazon's contract
Section 1 of the Operating Agreement settles it before any platform detail arrives: "The Associates Program permits you to monetize your website, social media user-generated content, online software application, or Alexa skill (referred to here as your 'Site')". Every clause about your Site therefore reaches the channel.
That includes disclosure, and Section 5 runs wider than the Site itself: the requirement attaches to "your Site or any other location where Amazon may authorize your display or other use of Program Content", and the standard is clearly and prominently.
Requirement 6(b) ends: "nor will you create links formatted with your Associates tag for, or display such links on, a site that is not your Site." A tagged link under somebody else's video runs straight into it.
Three participation rules that land hardest on video
- Requirement 2(b): "All Special Links must be accessed directly from your Site", and "You must not encourage customers to bookmark your Special Links." Telling viewers to save the link for later is what the second clause names.
- Requirement 6(g) rules out paying for the click in any currency: no "consideration, reward, or incentive (including any money, rebate, discount, points, donation to charity or other organization, or other benefit) for using Special Links". Buy through my link and you are entered into the giveaway is a direct hit.
- Hiding where a link goes belongs to 6(v) and 6(w), already unpacked in the piece on creating Amazon affiliate links.
None of the three mentions video, so none of them reads like a video rule, and the consequence still sits with the account. What actually closes accounts is in the ban list.
The price you say on camera
Amazon's price clause: "your Site may only show prices and availability if: (a) we serve the link in which that price and availability data are displayed, or (b) you obtain Product pricing and availability data via Creators API or PA API".
Amazon never mentions video there, so the next step needs a label. It is an inference: the rule is written about your Site, and Site takes in social media user generated content. Amazon has published nothing confirming that reading, and a video that states no figure has none to go stale.
Thumbnails, channel art and the Amazon marks
The Associates Trademark Guidelines open in capitals: "YOU ARE ALLOWED TO USE THE AMAZON MARKS ONLY BY DISPLAY ON YOUR SITE WITH THE PURPOSE OF ADVERTISING AVAILABILITY OF PRODUCTS ON AN AMAZON SITE, WITH A CORRESPONDING SPECIAL LINK TO THAT SITE." Later items rule out implying sponsorship or endorsement, and altering a mark's proportion, color or font.
On YouTube the first item lands on the thumbnail and the banner, where a mark can sit with no Special Link near it. The other two carry no such condition: stretching or recoloring a mark breaks the fourth item by itself, and artwork that makes the channel look blessed by Amazon breaks the third.
Tagging Amazon products is a separate money path
An Amazon product can also reach a video without a link. Through YouTube Shopping, "You can tag products from Amazon directly in your videos, Shorts, and livestreams." It needs Partner Program membership, enrollment in the United States program, an Amazon Influencer or Associates account in good standing, and the channel linked to it. YouTube calls the integration "currently available to a select group of creators".
| Your own Associates link | Amazon products tagged through YouTube Shopping | |
|---|---|---|
| Where it appears | Any surface both companies allow | Product tags on videos, Shorts and livestreams |
| Who can use it | An approved Associates account, channel declared | Partner Program channels enrolled in the United States, linked to an Amazon account |
| Markets | Whichever Amazon programs you hold | A country list with the United States on it and neither the United Kingdom nor Germany |
| How the money arrives | Through the program the sale happened in | AdSense for YouTube, 60 to 120 days, locked monthly, refunds deducted and negatives carried forward |
| What you can measure | Amazon's reporting against your tag | Aggregate daily revenue, clicks and sales, with no view of which videos or products drove purchases |
I run Associates accounts in the United States, United Kingdom and German programs, and this route exists in one of them. YouTube publishes a country list and no timetable.
Two things are not published at all. YouTube describes the linking as happening inside an Amazon Storefront profile, an Influencer surface, and Amazon does not publish what that screen looks like for an Associates only account. Neither company states whether a tagged sale runs on your own tag or on an identifier of YouTube's. The split between the two Amazon programs is in the Influencer and Associates comparison.
Where a disclosure belongs in a video
Amazon requires prominence and leaves placement open. The FTC answers placement for video directly.
- The description alone is not the answer. You can put it there, but "that's not enough on its own", and a disclosure "has the best chance of being clear and conspicuous if it's included in the video itself."
- For a recommendation partway through, the best place is "right before or at the beginning of the actual endorsement."
- Do not route people past it: you should not "provide consumers with a link to your review that bypasses the beginning and skips over the disclosure."
- Ads can bury it. "If YouTube has been enabled to run ads during your video, a disclosure that is obscured by ads isn't clear and conspicuous."
- In a live stream viewers arrive at any moment, so the guidance points to "multiple, periodic disclosures throughout the stream" or "a continuous, clear and conspicuous disclosure".
- Spoken only fails a second audience: "users who watch videos without sound won't hear it."
YouTube runs a parallel mechanism, a checkbox under Studio, Content, the video, More options, labeled "My video contains paid promotion like a product placement, sponsorship, or endorsement". Ticking it drops the video from the YouTube Kids app and lets YouTube swap a conflicting ad.
Whether a plain affiliate commission requires that box is answered by neither YouTube nor the FTC. YouTube's definitions of paid product placement, endorsement and sponsorship never name an affiliate commission. Responsibility is stated, though: creators "are responsible for understanding and fully following legal obligations to disclose paid promotion in their content according to their jurisdiction."
Which document answers which question
Where each answer lives:
| Question | Where the answer is published |
|---|---|
| Is YouTube an allowed surface for Amazon links | Amazon's application review help page, accepted social networks |
| Can this channel make a description link clickable | YouTube's feature access page, advanced features |
| Does an address spoken aloud count as a link | YouTube's external links policy |
| Is affiliate content allowed at all | One note on that same page |
| Where a disclosure goes inside a video | The FTC's endorsement guides, not Amazon, not YouTube |
| Subscriber count for the tagging program | Nowhere. Only that the channel meets the Partner Program threshold |
| Whether a tagged sale uses your Associates tag | Nowhere. Neither company writes it down |
| Whether an affiliate link needs the paid promotion box | Nowhere. The definitions never mention affiliate commissions |
| When tagging reaches the United Kingdom or Germany | Nowhere. A country list and no timeline |
Four of those nine rows are blank. Three of them sit on the newest mechanism, where the two companies touch, and the fourth on a disclosure control neither of them ties to affiliate income. Those are the parts to recheck rather than memorize. Amazon at least reprints its policies with a date on top, and the German agreement carries the same 15. Oktober 2025 date as the United States one. The rest of the rulebook is in the complete rules guide.
Frequently asked questions
Can a brand new YouTube channel put a clickable Amazon link in the description?
Not until the channel reaches advanced features, the level carrying clickable links in long form descriptions. A phone number reaches the level below. Advanced access comes with sufficient channel history, or verification with an identity document or video.
Are Amazon affiliate links allowed in Shorts descriptions?
Nothing forbids the link, but YouTube lists Shorts descriptions and Shorts comments among the surfaces where an external URL is not clickable. The address is text, and Amazon's rules still reach it.
Can I put my Amazon affiliate link in a pinned comment?
Pinning is itself an advanced features ability. Note the asymmetry: YouTube's external links policy names pinned comments explicitly, while Amazon's documents never mention them. On this one you work from a single rulebook.
Can I leave my affiliate link in a comment under someone else's video?
Amazon's requirement 6(b) says you will not create links formatted with your Associates tag for, or display such links on, a site that is not your Site. Another channel's video is not your Site.
Do I have to tick YouTube's paid promotion box for an Amazon affiliate link?
Neither YouTube nor the FTC publishes an answer. YouTube's definitions cover paid product placement, endorsement and sponsorship without naming affiliate commissions. Meeting your jurisdiction's disclosure obligations is your responsibility either way.
Is a disclosure in the video description enough?
The FTC's answer is that you can, but that is not enough on its own. A disclosure has its best chance of being clear and conspicuous inside the video itself.
How do I disclose an affiliate relationship in a live stream?
Because viewers join at different moments, the FTC points to multiple periodic disclosures through the stream, or a single continuous one. A mention at the top misses everyone arriving later.
Can I use an end screen to link to Amazon?
Linking an end screen to an external website is tied to Partner Program membership, and the linked site has to comply with YouTube's policies. Consequences run from link removal through strikes to termination of the Google Account.
How many subscribers does the YouTube Shopping affiliate program need?
Google publishes no number. The requirement is written as the channel being in the Partner Program and meeting that program's own subscriber threshold. Figures quoted elsewhere appear on no Google page.
Is Amazon product tagging available on YouTube in the UK or Germany?
No. The published country list runs from Argentina to Vietnam and includes the United States, but neither the United Kingdom nor Germany is on it. YouTube gives no timeline.
