Affiliate Marketing for Beginners, the Amazon Route

Serdar D.Written by Serdar D.Founder, usebraveryAug 21, 2026 · 9 min read

"Buying through my link supports this site at no extra cost to you." That line reads as plain courtesy, and Amazon's Participation Requirements put it out of bounds. The wording is flat: you cannot offer any person or entity any consideration, reward, or incentive for using your links, or request support through use of your links.

Nothing about that sentence looks like a breach. It is polite, it is honest about the arrangement, and it is the sentence the arrangement seems to invite. That is the real difficulty of starting here. The stages of the route are few and documented. What catches people is the space between them, where an instinct picked up from other affiliate writing meets a clause nobody reads out loud.

So this is a map rather than a manual. Each stage below is handed to the page on this site that already owns it, and what I keep is the part falling between them. Everything quoted was read on August 21, 2026 from Amazon's live pages on the American partner site, and where a page does not answer something I say so. I work inside the program in three markets, the United States, the United Kingdom and Germany.

The route is four stages and this page owns none of them

Written out, the route is shorter than the advice attached to it. Four decisions in order, each with a characteristic way of going wrong.

StageThe question it settlesThe mistake it invites
Choose what the site is aboutWhich products, which category, how crowded the ground isChoosing by the rate card rather than by what you can write weekly
ApplyWhether Amazon accepts the site or account you declareReading the sign-up confirmation as the decision
Make the first linksHow a link is generated and which marketplace it points atAssembling a link by hand instead of generating it
Stay inThe rules applying as long as the account existsReading them once, at the beginning, and never again

The first is a question about the category. The second is worked through in the approval write-up, so I will not duplicate it here. The third belongs to the link walk-through and the fourth to the standing rules. What follows is the residue, the clauses that catch beginners because no stage owns them.

The sentence beginners write that the program forbids

The clause at the top of this page carries a bracket showing how far it reaches. Amazon names two examples of what it is banning: proceeds from orders going to a particular charity or organization, and promoting use of your links to support you or your company.

So this is not only about a discount in exchange for a click. It covers the appeal to goodwill, which is the version a beginner reaches for first, because it feels like the candid one. What Amazon wants in its place is a disclosure, which states a fact rather than asking a favor.

Two disclosures, and the medium each belongs in

Amazon's help page keeps two obligations apart, and they are easy to read as one.

  • A disclosure at the link, meeting the FTC standard. Amazon asks for one that is Clear, offering "(paid link)", "#ad" and "#CommissionsEarned" as its own examples, and Conspicuous, which it explains as sitting beside the link or the review rather than somewhere a reader has to hunt for it.
  • The participation statement at the level of the property, the sentence the Operating Agreement obliges you to display. Where the content is published on a social network, it has to be associated with the account.

The same page adds a further condition that is easy to miss. The disclosure has to be made in the medium the recommendation was made in. Amazon's example is a voice skill. Recommend by voice and the disclosure is spoken, recommend in text and it is written, do both and it is owed in both. The skill's detail page does not count.

Not every prohibition is about where a link sits. Two are about mechanism, and they hold however respectable the surface is.

  • Moving a visitor without a click. Sending someone to Amazon automatically, or causing Amazon to open by itself inside a frame or in a new window, is not permitted.
  • Client-side software. Special Links may not be used in browser add-ons, helper objects, toolbars or extensions, and not on television set-top boxes either.

Both are easy to trip over with a plugin you did not write. A theme that opens outbound links in a new tab is a different thing from Amazon opening by itself with no click, and the second is the one written down. Pop-ups, pop-unders and layer ads answer to a separate rule and sit with the other surfaces in the placement guide.

The second half of the price rule

One half of the rule is straightforward. A price or availability figure may appear only where Amazon serves it through the link itself, or where you pulled it from the Creators API or the Product Advertising API. Typing this morning's price into a table is the mistake that clause exists to stop.

The Participation Requirements carry a second sentence on the same subject. Show an Amazon price as a comparison against a price for the same or a similar product somewhere other than Amazon, and you must also show Amazon's lowest new price, with the lowest used price where Amazon makes that available.

That obligation attaches to an ordinary comparison table, one Amazon column and one for another shop. Comparison is the trigger. A page quoting an Amazon price without setting it against an outside price never reaches that second sentence, though the first still binds it.

Amazon's own pages do not always agree

There is no single rulebook to read once. The Operating Agreement showed a last-updated date of October 15, 2025 when I opened it, the Program Policies April 14, 2026. Much of what a beginner needs week to week is in neither, sitting instead in separate help topics.

They also disagree in places. The policies fix a deadline in days for an order placed after a click. A help page describing the same cart expiry rounds the figure up and softens it with the word usually. One mechanism, two numbers, both published by Amazon. The day count is set out with the other terms in the standing rules. The habit worth taking is the one that surfaced it: note which page you read and what date it carried.

What an appeal actually asks for

A closed account is not one situation. The closure following a first quiet stretch is a withdrawn application, worked out in the 180 day piece. The other kind follows a violation, and Amazon publishes a procedure for it that is easy to overlook until you need it in a hurry.

The procedure splits by what the violation put at risk. The window does not.

What the violation put at riskWhat Amazon says the appeal has to doThe window
Nothing on the customer side. Amazon's example is failing to respond to a request for informationCorrect the violation and provide the information asked for, in your reply to the warningFive business days from the closure, through the Contact Us form under the Closed Account Appeal subject
Customer trust. Amazon's example is diverting traffic away from an Amazon siteShow in detail, with evidence, that the facts behind the decision are wrong. Amazon says that is the only kind it considersThe same window, the same form

Five business days is worth carrying now rather than looking up later, because the clock runs from the closure and not from the day you notice it.

Every country is a separate signup

The programs are national. Amazon's international page lists its own sign-up address for each one, and enrollment in the American program does not enroll you in the British or German one. For anyone whose readers are spread across markets, this changes what an account even is.

One caution about that page. Its prose states a number of locations that does not match the number of addresses it lists, so I quote neither figure. Read the list, not the count. What each marketplace pays is its own question, and it sits in the commission rates breakdown.

What Amazon publishes about paying someone to set this up

One paragraph of the Participation Requirements is addressed to beginners specifically, and I would rather put it in front of you than let you meet it elsewhere. The program is free to join, Amazon says, and it provides resources to help Associates succeed. Then this: it has never authorized any business to provide paid set-up or consulting services to its associates, and asks you to be wary of such a business reaching out with costly services, including one appropriating the Amazon name.

This site is published by a company that builds Amazon affiliate sites for a fee, so weigh that paragraph with the bias attached. The part holding true whoever you buy from is worth keeping: joining costs nothing, Amazon has authorized no vendor to do this work, and nothing sold to you changes how Amazon reviews an application.

Where a beginner should actually start

The order is the dull one and it survives contact with the program. Settle what the site is about, decide which site or account you will declare, apply, then make the first links. That much is uncontroversial.

What this page adds is the set of conditions true across all four stages at once. You may not ask for support through your links. Disclosure has two halves and belongs in the medium the recommendation was made in. Prices are never typed, and a comparison against an outside price pulls in a further obligation. Mechanism counts as heavily as placement.

How much of a week any of this takes gets an honest answer in the hours breakdown. The rest of the route is not secret and never was. It is written down, across more pages than one, which is the whole reason it goes missing.

Frequently asked questions

Can I tell readers that buying through my link supports the site?

No. Amazon's Participation Requirements bar offering any consideration, reward or incentive for using your links, and separately bar requesting support through them. The examples given are proceeds going to a charity or organization, and promoting your links as a way to support you or your company.

Is the Amazon Associate participation statement enough on its own?

Amazon's help page treats it as one of two things. The participation statement sits at the level of the property and is required by the Operating Agreement. A separate disclosure belongs at the link, meeting the FTC standard, and Amazon offers paid link, #ad and #CommissionsEarned as examples of clear wording.

Does a disclosure have to be spoken if the recommendation is spoken?

Yes, on Amazon's own instruction. The disclosure has to be made in the medium the recommendation was made in. Its example is a voice skill, where a spoken recommendation needs a spoken disclosure, and putting the text on the skill's detail page does not satisfy it.

Can I send visitors to Amazon automatically?

No. Sending a visitor to Amazon without a click, or causing Amazon to open by itself in a frame or a new window, is prohibited. This is about mechanism rather than surface, so an otherwise compliant page still breaks it.

Can I put Amazon affiliate links in a browser extension?

No. Special Links may not be used in client-side applications, and Amazon names browser add-ons, helper objects, toolbars and extensions. Television set-top boxes are covered by the same clause. It rules out a category of product rather than a placement.

What do I have to show if I compare an Amazon price with another shop's price?

Amazon's lowest new price, plus the lowest used price where Amazon makes that available to you. The comparison itself is the trigger. Separately, any price or availability figure has to come from Amazon serving it through the link, or from the Creators API or Product Advertising API.

How long do I have to appeal a closed account?

Five business days from the closure, through the Contact Us form under the Closed Account Appeal subject. The window is short and runs from the closure rather than from the day you notice it, which is why the figure is worth knowing early.

Do I have to sign up separately for each country?

Yes. The programs are national and Amazon's international page carries a separate sign-up address for each, so an American account does not put you in the British or German program. The page's own prose count does not match the number of addresses it lists, so read the list rather than the count.

Has Amazon authorized anyone to sell Associates setup services?

No, and it says so in the Participation Requirements. Amazon states the program is free to join, that it has never authorized any business to provide paid set-up or consulting services to its associates, and that you should be wary of such a business reaching out with costly services, including one appropriating the Amazon name.

Where should a beginner start on the Amazon route?

With the subject of the site, since it governs everything after it. Then the application, then the first links, then the ongoing rules. Those four stages are covered on this site in the niche piece, the approval write-up, the link walk-through and the rules guide.
