Is the Amazon Associates Program Worth It in 2026
Clause 13 of the Amazon Associates Operating Agreement decides how much warning you get before the deal changes. On August 21, 2026 I read it on all three partner sites I hold accounts with. The American text sets the floor at no less than two business days. The British text says seven calendar days. The German text says frühestens sieben Kalendertage. The American and German texts both carried the same last-updated stamp, October 15, 2025.
That is not a translation artifact: the British agreement is written in English and it also says seven. Same program, same clause number, one group of partners promised a week and the other two working days.
I run Associates in all three of those stores, which is why this question has never had one answer for me. So this article answers it from the contract and the payout machinery rather than from percentages, which Amazon does not show the public and which the rate card guide here covers. Every figure below is a threshold quoted from Amazon, not an earnings figure.
The same clause, three different floors
Section 13 is headed Modification. The American wording: the effective date of such change will be the date specified, which other than increased Standard Commission Income and Special Commission Income will be no less than two business days from the date the notice is provided.
Read the carve-out, not the number. Increases are exempted from the floor, so a rise can take effect on any date Amazon names. The minimum notice exists only for the direction that costs you something.
The British text swaps two business days for seven calendar days, and the German Ziffer 13 does the same, exempting Standardvergütung and Sondervergütung before setting its floor at frühestens sieben Kalendertage.
You are not signing with the same company
Schedule 1 of the American agreement names Amazon.com Services LLC. The UK and European agreement lists its locations on one page, Germany among them, all contracting with Amazon Europe Core S.a r.l. A German partner and a British partner sign the same paper. An American partner does not.
Schedule 2 is where that stops being trivia. The American one sends disputes to binding arbitration under the Federal Arbitration Act, not to court, with small claims the one exception either side may elect. The European one applies Luxembourg law, with the forum in Luxembourg City. That each market needs its own account is covered in the guide to running three markets. The addition here is that they are governed separately, not merely held separately.
| Contract term | United States | United Kingdom and Germany |
|---|---|---|
| Agreement last updated | October 15, 2025 | October 15, 2025 on the German text |
| Contracting Amazon entity | Amazon.com Services LLC | Amazon Europe Core S.a r.l. |
| Dispute route | Binding arbitration, Federal Arbitration Act | Courts of Luxembourg City |
| Notice before a change that is not an increase | Two business days | Seven calendar days |
| Notice to end the agreement, either side | Seven calendar days | Seven calendar days |
Read on August 21, 2026. Amazon revises these documents, so check the live text before relying on any row.
Either side can walk with seven days notice
Section 6 is the most reassuring paragraph in the document. Either you or we may terminate this Agreement at any time, with or without cause, it says, effective 7 calendar days from the date notice is provided. Identical in all three markets, it points both ways: your exit is a menu item under Account Settings.
The same section then lists where those seven days do not apply and Amazon may act immediately. Among them:
- A material breach of the agreement.
- Amazon deciding it is exposed to liability because of you.
- In Amazon's own words, that we believe that our brand or reputation may be tarnished by you.
- Another account Amazon considers related to yours having been closed previously.
- Amazon having terminated the Associates Program as it generally makes it available to participants.
The last item is not a prediction, just a fact about the document: withdrawal of the whole program is written into its own termination clause. The reputation item is judgment rather than rule, since there is no checklist for not tarnishing a brand. For breaches that are testable, see which failures close accounts.
Money already earned is not automatically yours
Section 2 holds the harshest sentence, and its severity sits in two qualifiers, not the verb. If you violate the agreement, Amazon reserves the right to permanently cease payment of any and all commission income otherwise payable to you, whether or not directly related to such violation, without notice.
Whether or not directly related means the consequence is not scoped to the links that broke the rule. It reaches the balance. Without notice means there is no window to fix the thing and keep the money. A separate, duller clause lets Amazon hold accrued commission after termination while returns settle, which is a delay rather than a forfeiture.
Your rate card is addressed to you
The rates page here already notes that Amazon's public schedule link lands on a sign-in wall. Reading it in three markets adds two things.
First, it is the same wall everywhere. The Standard and Special Commission Income links in the policy appendix all point at the schedule path, and following them without a session ends at a sign-in screen in all three stores. The German menu calls the item Vergütungskatalog and closes it identically.
Second, the wording on the public side of it. Commission is rounded to the nearest local currency amount, which Amazon says may make your effective commission rate slightly higher or lower than the rate described in your rate card. Your rate card: a document addressed to an account, not published to an audience.
Earning and collecting are two separate gates
Passing a sale through is one event. Having the money arrive is another, with its own rules, and those differ by store.
Start with the timing. Commission is paid in the default currency for an Amazon Site approximately 60 days after the end of the calendar month in which it was earned. The policy text and the program home page, which needs no login, say so independently.
| Payment option | United States | United Kingdom | Germany and the euro markets |
|---|---|---|---|
| Direct deposit, minimum | 10 USD | 25 GBP | EUR 25 |
| Amazon gift card, minimum | 10 USD | 25 GBP | EUR 25 |
| Amazon gift card, maximum | 2000 USD | 5000 GBP | EUR 5000 |
| Check, minimum | 100 USD | 50 GBP | EUR 50 |
| Check processing fee | 15 USD | Not applicable | Not applicable |
An American partner reaches the deposit gate at 10 USD, a lower balance than either of the other two, and only an American check carries a processing fee.
A sourcing note: the German figures come not from the German partner site, whose policy page returned no usable text, but from the UK and European document, whose chart column names Germany explicitly. Availability is uneven too.
| Payment method | Where Amazon states it is not available |
|---|---|
| Amazon gift card | Belgium, Ireland, the Netherlands, Poland, Sweden |
| Check | Belgium, the Netherlands, Poland, Sweden |
| Direct deposit | No exclusion listed in the chart |
What the percentage is applied to, and what never counts
Your rate is not multiplied by the number on the product page. Amazon defines qualifying revenue as the amount it actually receives, less shipping charges, gift-wrapping fees, handling fees, taxes such as sales tax and VAT, service charges, credits, rebates, credit card processing fees, and bad debt. Nine kinds of deduction come off before the multiplication.
The same statement lists purchases that do not qualify at all. The ones that surprise people:
- Any product ordered after the agreement has been terminated.
- Any product order where a cancellation, return, or refund has been initiated.
- Sales not tracked correctly because the links were not properly formatted.
- Products bought as a subscription rather than as a one-off order.
- Pre-order or pre-release products not available on the product listing page.
The word doing the work in the second item is initiated. Not completed, not approved. A customer starting a return moves that order out of the qualifying column before anything is decided. The formatting item is quieter: a link that works for a human but does not carry tracking gives you a sale you can watch and cannot be paid for, and it does not count towards the enrollment clock either.
A quiet account is not a parked account
An account holding a small balance cannot simply sit there. Amazon's help page says that where no commission income has been earned in the 3 years prior to a given calendar month, it may charge a maintenance fee set at the lesser of 10 USD or the unpaid accrued balance, and close the account for dormancy. Unpaid commission may also be subject to escheatment under state law.
A sibling clause has a different trigger. Where there has been no substantial activity for at least 3 years, Amazon may, on 7 days written notice, withhold accrued commission up to the gift card minimum in the Payment Minimum Chart: 10 USD in the United States, 25 GBP in the United Kingdom, EUR 25 in the euro markets.
Two things Amazon does not let your site do
The participation requirements contain two prohibitions that constrain what you build rather than what you say.
Your site must not have price tracking or price alerting functionality. Not stale prices, the feature itself. That rules out price history charts and drop alerts as site features. Separately, you may not, without express prior written approval, use Special Links or Program Content to develop machine learning models.
Both sit beside the original content rule, and the enrollment section is explicit that Amazon determines suitability at its sole discretion, with reapplication allowed once you comply. The wider map is in the rules guide here and the approval write-up.
What worth it actually turns on
Every honest version of this answer is conditional, so here are the conditions in place of a number. Which contract binds you, since it fixes your notice period and your governing law. Whether the collection gate in your currency is reachable at the scale you are planning. And whether a seven day symmetric exit, with immediate exit available to the other side on grounds including its own view of its reputation, is a foundation you want underneath a business.
None of that argues against joining. I am in the program in three countries and build on it for other people. It argues against answering with an average, because what an average describes is not one program. It is three contracts, three collection regimes and one brand name across all of them.
Häufige Fragen
Is Amazon Associates the same program in every country?
Not contractually. The American agreement names Amazon.com Services LLC and sends disputes to arbitration under the Federal Arbitration Act. The agreement covering the United Kingdom and Germany names Amazon Europe Core S.a r.l. and applies Luxembourg law. The brand is shared, the contract is not.
How much notice does Amazon give before changing the Associates terms?
Section 13 sets a floor that moves by market: no less than two business days in the American text, seven calendar days in the British and German ones. In all three, increases in commission income are exempted from that minimum.
Is the Amazon Associates program legitimate?
It is a real contractual program run by named Amazon entities, with a published agreement, published policies and a documented payment process. The useful questions are which entity you contract with, what the termination and forfeiture clauses allow, and whether your market's payout threshold suits you.
Can I leave Amazon Associates whenever I want?
Yes, and the clause runs both ways. Section 6 says either party may terminate at any time, with or without cause, effective 7 calendar days from the date notice is provided. On your side, notice is given through the account closure option under Account Settings.
When does Amazon pay Associates commission?
Approximately 60 days after the end of the calendar month in which it was earned, in the default currency for that Amazon Site. Two Amazon sources say so independently: the Program Policies text and the program home page, which needs no login.
What is the minimum balance before Amazon Associates pays out?
It depends on market and method. Direct deposit opens at 10 USD in the United States, 25 GBP in the United Kingdom and EUR 25 in the euro markets. Checks carry higher minimums, and only an American check carries a 15 USD processing fee.
Is Amazon commission calculated on the price the customer sees?
No. It is calculated on qualifying revenue: the amount Amazon actually receives, less shipping charges, gift-wrapping fees, handling fees, taxes including sales tax and VAT, service charges, credits, rebates, card processing fees and bad debt. The percentage applies after those deductions.
Does a returned order still count as a qualifying purchase?
No, and the trigger is earlier than most people expect. The disqualified list covers any order where a cancellation, return or refund has been initiated. Initiated, not completed. A customer merely beginning the process disqualifies the order.
What happens to an Amazon Associates account that earns nothing for years?
Amazon's help page says that where no commission income has been earned in the 3 years before a given calendar month, it may charge a maintenance fee set at the lesser of 10 USD or the unpaid balance, and close the account for dormancy.
Can my affiliate site show Amazon price history or price drop alerts?
No. The participation requirements state that your site must not have price tracking or price alerting functionality. That restricts the feature itself, not price accuracy. A separate clause bars using Special Links or Program Content to develop machine learning models without written approval.
